never touched your ears:

you’re right.

If you are brown,

You can stick around.

But if you are black,

Its warning was composed years

before you were born in Africa, or in the West Indies too.

But you heard multicultural words

as a welcoming permission. Permission

coloured your vision, pernicious smile of entry.

Again . . .

For there are no Elders.

Only old men standing

in disregard.

Old men, we shall go

to everlasting dampness

in the grave, buried deeper

in everlasting silence.

Silence my words and the description

with which I opened this confession:

your castigation,

unrecognizable to you.
